Welcome to Scarecrow & Nut Tree. We’re here to make the world a little lighter, a little brighter—and a whole lot more connected.
We’re a small, indie studio in Portland, Oregon, and we believe in the everyday magic of communication—whether it’s sweet, silly, supportive—or sexy.
We know a card—yes, even one made of 100% post-consumer recycled goodness—won’t fix everything. But it can spark a smile, build a bridge, and remind someone they matter. And honestly? That ripple effect is everything.
Our cards are all about celebrating the good stuff: birthdays, love, thank-yous, holidays, and those tippity-top, all-important just-because moments. You’ll find sweet notes, flirty winks, quirky jokes, sexy smiles, and a few groan-worthy puns we’re weirdly proud of.
Who’s behind all this?
I’m Josh Nusbaum, the founder, artist, designer and creative director behind Scarecrow & Nut Tree. I’ve been drawing, painting, printmaking and generally making things for nearly 50 years. I also make music and write songs, poetry and prose. I seem to be here to make marks.
Long before Scarecrow & Nut Tree existed, I studied Studio Art and Environmental Studies in college. My senior project took me into the Grand Canyon and Sierra Nevada to paint landscapes. In the years that followed, I continued working in traditional media, including oil painting and hand-carved block printing, and showed that work in solo gallery and restaurant exhibitions.
Eventually, that path led me to greeting cards. More than 15 years ago, I founded Waterknot, an outdoor-inspired greeting card company that began with a hundred-year-old letterpress I rehabbed and operated by foot.
After years of making cards rooted in wild places, wildlife and outdoor adventure, I wanted another creative playground—one with room for a broader range of art, humor, romance, weirdness and the occasional sexy joke. And so Scarecrow & Nut Tree was born.
