The Other Almanac is a contemporary reimagining in the style of traditional, much-beloved American farmers’ almanacs.
A sparkling new take on an age-old publication, The Other Almanac brings together contributions by writers, artists, and scientists on topics including environmentalism, botany, whales, seasonal savvy, and off-the-beaten-track curiosities,
The Other Almanac is most closely inspired by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the longest continuously printed publication in the United States (printed every year since 1792).
Unlike The Old Farmer’s Almanac, our goal is not to shy away from writing on subjects such as climate change, grief, exploitation, and extinction, but rather to publish work that acknowledges the effects that our civilization’s actions, laws, and thinking have on our neighbors across many species.
Now is the time for a new almanac—one that is deep, meaningful, and bridges across the urban and rural divide here in the US.
Even though the materials, contents, and uses of almanacs have changed over time, what they all share are observations of cyclical time (in the sky, sea, or on Earth) interpreted to help people understand both the human and more-than-human community.
Paying attention to the smaller and quieter world nestled within urban environments isn’t easy. With this in mind, we created The Other Almanac as a lens that draws focus to the overlooked and tender moments and lives around us. By recognizing the interconnectedness of our thriving urban ecosystem, we can move away from atomization and toward solidarity, kinship, and mutual aid.
