From a Fundraiser to a Brand In 2010, Jessica Honegger found herself in the recession right in the middle of adopting a child from Rwanda. As a home flipper and realtor, she didn't want a financial obstacle to get in the way of completing the adoption. On a previous trip to Uganda, Jessica met Jalia Matovu, who created beautiful handmade goods but lacked a stable marketplace to grow her venture. Honegger, now cornered by courage, saw a solution to both of their problems: By selling Jalia's handmade goods in the US, Jessica could raise funds to adopt her son, while simultaneously generating revenue for Jalia's venture. The overwhelming reaction to the story and the products propelled Honegger to turn her at-home fundraiser into an actual company. 15 years later, the brand has invested over $30 million in payments to artisans worldwide and has created flourishing in vulnerable communities around the world.
