“Becoming a father in 2003 really helped inspire me to create a cool and hip clothing line that spoke to my generation.”
— Nate1
New Skool is owned by San Francisco Artist and Designer Nathan “Nate1” Tan.
Initially an infant/toddler line, New Skool has expanded to mens, womens, accessories and now art.
Back in the Days: Nate co-founded the West Coast Chapter of the Master Piece Creators Crew (MPC), with graffiti partner Omen2 in 1987. This was the heyday of Hip Hop culture developing in the Bay Area. MPC was an influential graffiti crew that was known for painting large scale murals with socially conscious messages. Their work has been featured in many graffiti art publications most notably The History of American Graffiti book where they were featured as pioneers of the West Coast movement and the video documentary Piece by Piece.
Over this 30+ year involvement with the art form, Nate has added teaching and curating art shows to his resume.
“New Skool allows me to merge my love for creating art into something that can be worn by babies, kids and adults. Seeing people on the street wearing my designs is still a really cool thing.”
