A Han-Made Tale Han (N.) /ˈhän/ -- A Korean word with no clean English equivalent. A collective sorrow, generational grief, and simmering rage born of displacement, war, and unhealed wounds. Less an emotion than an ethereal echo: a knot in the throat, a fire in the marrow, a phantom thread that ties families together. An heir to the loom To inherit Han is to carry an artful ache: ambition woven from grief, fibers spun and stabbed from loss, stitches pulled from silence. It’s always been in me, my mom, and my grandma. Passed from my grandmother to my mother to me. It shows up every day in my art, disobedience, and compulsion to make you laugh. This is our story ↓ My Grandma My grandma carried her crafts (and craftiness) to the US from Korea in the 1950s: custom embroidered bedsheets, hand-sewn clothes, a fierce love of fun, and an unforgettable laugh. My Mom Making new threads in New England, my grandma showed my mom to stitch fabric and family together, piecing together a life from scraps – to loudly make it her own way. Then Me My mom passed those hands to me, granting free rein to cut, draw, stab, and sew wherever my whims and limbs whisked me. I've been making a mess ever since.
